About Nutrition Link
Nutrition Link is a 3rd, 4th & 5th Grade Nutrition Education Program with both web-based and in-class lessons that meet California Core Content Standards (reading, math, geography, and social studies) and includes Parent Education through Nutrition Link website, newsletters, and parent talks. Nutrition Link is a partnership between the UCSD Division of Community Pediatrics, Rosa Parks Elementary School, and Lemon Grove School District with the support of the Network for a Healthy California, and the San Diego and Imperial Counties Regional Networks for a Healthy California to enhance community-based nutrition Programs education.
Nutrition Link is Based On USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans, Healthy People 2010 Objectives, California Core Content Standards (CDE), California Nutrition Competency Guidelines (CDE), 5 a Day Power Play! Program, American College of Sports Medicine Physical Activity Guidelines and CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) Program.
Through evaluation of the Nutrition Link program, research showed that Nutrition Link students had significantly greater knowledge than Control students about Food Guide Pyramid, Everyday, Sometimes, and Special Occasion Foods and the Importance of Eating a Low-fat Diet . Nutrition Link students reported significantly higher consumption of fresh vegetables and 100% fruit juice as “Healthy” snacks. Nutrition Link students reported a significantly lower consumption of Chips . And most impressively, 86% of Nutrition Link students consumed breakfast 5-6 days compared to 43% of control students.
