ROOTS

Karana ate many roots while on the island. We also eat roots, or root vegetables, when we crunch on carrots!

Rabbit eating carrots

This blue flower that grows on the island has a thick root that grows like a carrot underground.

The flower was pulled out of the ground and the root was either eaten raw or cooked over a fire. Karana saved many of the roots for winter.

"Every morning after I had gathered roots to store for winter, we went out to sea."

These roots are in the vegetable group of the food guide pyramid.
